Looking for sushi joints that won’t burn a hole in your pocket traveling on a budget? Here’s 5 for you!
Sushi, a statement of the Japanese cuisine. An important contributor to Japanese culture.
There are so many different types of sushi restaurants in Japan! But today, I am going to introduce 5 sushi restaurants that I have deemed is affordable even for a student.
P.S: The Conversion Rate that I included in this article is roughly ¥100 = USD0.93.
1. くら寿司(Kura Zushi)
Operating Hours (Varies for each store):
Mondays to Fridays from 11:00 to 23:00~24:00, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 10:20~11:00 to 23:00~24:00
Kura Zushi is a popular conveyor belt sushi chain that is popular among families. The sushi here is not only affordable (¥105 = USD0.98) but also entertaining!
Why so?
With every 5 plates of sushi that you consume, you can slot the plates into the return slit right below the hot water tap and play a game. This helps to keep the kids occupied while eating and if you win, you get a prize too! This is definitely a great place for families with kids!
2. 鮨処 八千代 (Sushi Yachiyo)
Operating Hours:
Mondays to Fridays from 11:00 to 14:30, 17:00 to 23:00, Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 11:00 to 23:00
Sushi Yachiyo is another chain sushi restaurant offering affordable lunch sets of around ¥1,000 (USD9.32) – ¥2,000 (USD18.63). The more expensive the set, the more nigiri and temaki sushi you get. The lunch set also comes with green tea and a bowl of miso soup which is a better option. The sushi offered in the lunch sets differs from day to day, depending on the fresh ingredients that arrive in store on the day itself!
You can also order the sushi individually if you do not like the sushi choices provided in the Lunch set for the day. However, this might not be as economical but you should definitely give this place’s sushi a try!
3. 元祖寿司 (Ganso Sushi)
Operating Hours (Varies for each store):
Mondays to Fridays from 11:30 to 21:00~23:00, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays: From 11:30 to 22:00 (Last Order 15 minutes before closure)
Ganso Sushi is another conveyor belt type sushi chain that can be found commonly in Tokyo. There will be many similar kinds of sushi going around on the conveyor belt, but there is a separate menu for you to order what you want that is not on the belt. The sushi chefs will then prepare them and serve them to you.
4. 美登利のすし (Midori Zushi)
Operating Hours (Varies for each branch):
Monday-Friday, 11:00–22:00 (Last Order 21:45)
Sunday 11:00–22:00 (Last Order 21:30).
※ Closed on January 1st.
As this is quite a popular joint, it is best to visit other branches instead of the main one in Shibuya as there will always be a long line. Alternatively, you can make a reservation by calling them.
Midori no Sushi offers quality sushi at affordable prices. The prices for this sushi joint is definitely higher than the other recommended ones, but it is definitely worth its price!
5. 元気寿司 (Genki Sushi)
Operating Hours (Varies for each branch): Daily from 11:00 to 21:00~22:00
Genki Sushi is one of the most well-known conveyor belt sushi that accommodates families or any other groups of people. The sushi price also depends on the store that you go to. Genki has 2 kinds of stores: some that serve almost everything for ¥105 (USD0.98) or others at ¥120 (USD1.12). Despite that, Genki Sushi is still very affordable and a full meal should cost less than ¥1,000 (USD9.32).
With that, I end my list of affordable sushi recommendations that even on a budget, you can still enjoy!
I hope you can try them all out if you intend to travel to the land of the rising sun, Japan, or if you’ve already checked them out, do comment on some other sushi chains that I should check out!
Happy eating and have fun! 🙂
